Background:
The SFU chapter of Phi Delta Epsilon, Canada Beta, is comprised of SFU pre-medical students who, alongside their studies, are committed to giving back to the community. One of their philanthropic events this year includes the second annual Anatomy Fashion Show, taking place on March 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at SFU Harbour Centre in the Joseph & Rosalie Segal Centre. Tickets are $18 and can be purchased here.
I interviewed Monique, Chair of the Organizing Committee, about the upcoming event.
Interview:
Amy: What is the Anatomy Fashion Show?
Monique: Local artists volunteer their time to paint anatomical depictions (e.g., musculoskeletal system, nervous system, digestive system, reproductive system, etc.) onto volunteer models. The models strut their stuff down the runway to music and humorous narration.
A: How did the Anatomy Fashion Show start at SFU?
M: The inspiration for our show came from a desire to hold an entertaining fundraiser to raise money for B.C. Children's Hospital. Our goal was to create an event that was new, different, and fun! Started by the Alpha Chapter at Florida International University in 2012, the Anatomy Fashion Show is the signature fundraising event for Phi Delta Epsilon. With help from SFSS and SFU, we are pleased to have been able to bring the Anatomy Fashion show to SFU. Due to the high demand in 2016, we are excited to hold another event this year which will be even bigger and better than the event last year.
A: What can attendees anticipate for the event this year?
M: Featuring live entertainment, a photo booth, and a door prize/raffle, as well as some delicious food, we invite attendees to come and watch our models exhibit all the wonders and intricacies of the human body. The great part of the Anatomy Fashion Show is that it is a fun way to learn more about our own bodies.
A: Which organization will receive the proceeds?
M: All money raised by the fashion show will be donated to Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). As a proud fundraising partner of CMN, Phi Delta Epsilon has an agreement that all funds raised will be given to our local hospital, B.C. Children’s Hospital. The top donors or fundraisers will receive a special gift from the organizing committee on the day of the event!
