As a first year student, I wanted to get experience and find out what public health was all about because that’s what I’m interested in. I couldn’t handle a job and school work, but then I found out that there were many ways I could build experience, and one of them was volunteering.

I found out about BC Children’s Hospital through one of my friends; it’s been almost three years, and it’s been amazing. As a Child Life Volunteer, I work with Child Life Specialists to support activities we do with the children. We get to play games with them, do crafts and colouring, and if parents are ever in need of a break we’ll be happy to step in for a bit and play.

If you’re volunteering at BC Children’s Hospital, try to be open-minded to the whole experience, because it can be overwhelming at first when you go in not knowing what to expect. Try to see that you being there does make a difference, and anything you can provide, even if it’s just a 30 minute break, is huge. Your impact is more than you think.
