My name is Kristen Sokalski, a second-year medical student in the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. I am writing because four second year medical students and I are in the process of planning a Pre-Med Symposium for November, 2012. One of the objectives of the Faculty of Medicine is to increase representation of students from a variety of backgrounds, including students with a lower socio-economic status, students with unconventional degrees (tourism, arts), mature students, students with established families, Aboriginal individuals, and students who face other challenges. With the Pre-Medical Symposium, we hope to demystify misguided beliefs about medicine. In addition, we will provide resources, and information on admission process and medical school itself. The symposium will be primarily held in Vancouver at UBC, but video-conferenced to sites at University of Victoria, UBC Okanagan and UNBC with medical students at each of these sites to share their personal experience in overcoming barriers they faced when applying to medicine.
Are you a non-traditional student who is considering medicine? If so, we would like to invite you to attend our symposium.
