Kayla Wu & Remitbee

This week’s SFU Surrey Co-op featured student is Kayla Wu, an Interactive Arts & Technology student who has been doing some excellent UI/UX design work at Remitbee Incorporated. Remitbee is a financial organization whose mission is to “Spark the financial revolution by connecting people and money - across borders, currencies, and cultures.” During her co-op, Kayla has been designing a user interface, conducting heuristic usability tests, and carrying out user research for a confidential project. 

Kayla’s Favourite Part of Her Co-op Experience

Kayla says her favourite part of the job is the flexibility she is given while working on her projects. When she first started, she was assigned a big project and was given the freedom to decide how she managed it, which in turn helped her improve her time management skills. Kayla also enjoys how friendly her coworkers are and says: “Remitbee is an awesome company, students get to work with a variety of different projects in software engineering, business development, marketing and also product design. Remitbee provides meaningful learning opportunities so each student walks away with tangible skills that they can use in the future.”

When asked for their thoughts on hiring a co-op student, Kayla's supervisor said: “The co-op program is an excellent opportunity to build relationships with our future employees. We select students who are eager to learn, willing to challenge themselves and looking for ways to make the world a better place. Over 90% of past interns are fully satisfied with the opportunities provided and many of them have no trouble in securing future co-ops elsewhere because we prepare them well in their own respective fields. We’re ready to provide that same opportunity to our future interns as well.”

How the SFU SIAT Co-op Program Has Supported Kayla 

Kayla says that the co-op program has helped her prepare and improve her resume, cover letters, and portfolio which she felt was especially important as an ESL student. Furthermore, the mock interviews her program advisor conducted helped her feel more confident and prepared for interviews.

Kayla’s Advice to Other Co-op Students

Kayla’s advice to other co-op students is to “ Be prepared! You should always be prepared during job hunting. Keep practicing your interview skills and doing mock interviews with others. Also, keep improving your portfolio. Don’t give up till you get the job offer.”
