Position Title

Madelaine Carter, a third year SFU health sciences student, is completing her first co-op work term at British Columbia Mobility Opportunities Society (BCMOS), a non-profit organization that provides outdoor recreational activities to people with physical disabilities.

She is in charge of all the kayaking and paddle boarding activities. Depending on the participant, there are various tools to help them transfer them into the kayak or paddle board (for example a transfer board or a hoyer lift).

Each participant is different in regards to their disability and needs, so it's been really interesting for Madelaine to work with and learn about a wide range of disabilities.

"The part that I love most about my job is the personal connections that I am able to build with the participants while out on the water with them, and learning about the struggles each of them have had to overcome. I have learnt a lot as a paddling coordinator, and it's very rewarding to be a part of an organization that works to give people with disabilities the same opportunities that we may take for granted."
