Applying for a volunteer opportunity, a job, or graduate school, are all forms of taking career-related action. Many posts on the CSI Blog demonstrate the importance of taking action, as doing so can have a tremendous – often positive – effect on you and your future. In addition, taking action through the methods described above may enhance your network, allowing you to grow professionally (and possibly gain a competitive edge) while simultaneously opening up new opportunities. Having a good resume, being involved on or off-campus with volunteer work, and trying out new experiences are important parts of being a prime candidate for career opportunities after graduation. So, here’s where the good news comes in.
TAKE ACTION
On Wednesday, March 26th, SFU Career Services and SFU Volunteer Services will be holding the miniBIG Fair 2014. At this annual event, you will have the opportunity to network with over 40 employers on-site, including Canucks Sports & Entertainment, Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), City of Richmond, Desjardins Financial Security Independent Network and IKEA, among others. There will also be a number of volunteer organizations present, including the BC Cancer Foundation and Developmental Disabilities Association. You may also learn more about campus engagement on the ‘Conversation Couch’ where you can meet an Engagement Peer.
You’ll also have the chance to find out more about your options in graduate school, including the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine and New York Institute of Technology. In addition, a sign-up form for a LinkedIn photo-shoot is available on Symplicity (search ‘LinkedIn Photoshoot’) – this could be your opportunity to get the professional headshot you’ve always wanted! WELCOME OPPORTUNITIES
Overall, this is a great chance to take action with your career. You get to experience a bit of everything and gain a lot of valuable information. Plus, you can “dress to impress,” which can give you a good feel for interview-like conditions, and give you an idea of how you may want to prepare for an interview. Taking action in your career is one of the most proactive things you can do to make yourself stand out, so make sure you do not miss this great opportunity!

CLOSING THOUGHTS
We get it. Students have fairly busy lives, balancing a large course load with extracurricular activities, socializing, and perhaps working part-time. With all those responsibilities, it is not easy to fit ‘career exploration’ into your schedules (though it is important). Taking action with your career will ultimately be an important part of your life. This does not necessarily mean planning each step of your journey, but instead being ready to take on new opportunities, and miniBIG Fair 2014 is definitely one you do not want to pass up.
