More than 20 Aboriginal basketball teams from around B.C. and Alberta are expected to turn out for the second Native Basketball Tournament/Festival at SFU’s Burnaby campus on May 20-22, 2016. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of spectators, and organizers expect this year’s event will be equally popular. Aboriginal entertainment, food, crafts vendors, and elders will all once again be a part of the festivities. The tournament is a community partnership between SFU, FNSA and the Native Education College.

Native Basketball Festival is coming May 2016

With a commitment to creating unique and memorable experiences, NEC and SFU are teaming up to create our most exciting event to date—the Native Basketball Festival—taking place May 20-22, 2016 at the Lorne Davis Complex SFU, Burnaby, BC. The Native Basketball Festival will use the First Nations tradition of friendly competition combined with cultural exhibitions to bring together 500 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal basketball players, Elders, performers, venders, volunteers, families and friends.

"I grew up in Squamish BC, learning from elders and knowledgeable community members about Squamish Nation culture.  Many of my fondest memories are walking to downtown with my grandpa, sitting at my grand uncles kitchen table and going up the river to fish. During these formative years I was always careful to listen to what they had to say."
