Why should I become a tutor?

They say one of the best ways to learn something well is to explain it to someone else. By helping someone else you may find the gaps in your own understanding that you didn't know were there, and you'll find ways to fill them in.

You can change how a student feels about a class:

  1. Do you have a sincere desire to help others?

  2. Are you able to communicate effectively?

  3. Do you have a 'B' or better in the subject you wish to tutor?

If you answered yes to all of these, then we invite you to apply for a rewarding position as an academic tutor.

Here are some of the rewards of being a tutor:

  • Help others.

  • Enhance your knowledge of the subject.

  • Develop and improve your communication skills.

  • Learn how to become a more organized student.

  • Increase your confidence by facing and defeating challenges.

  • Gain experience in a leadership role.

  • Looks good when applying to universities or future jobs.

  • Work on campus, close to classes.

  • Earn some extra $$.

  • Receive priority registration.

If you are thinking of becoming a tutor and helping out some of the Indigenous Students please drop by in person or email ggeorge@sfu.ca for questions.

"I grew up in Squamish BC, learning from elders and knowledgeable community members about Squamish Nation culture.  Many of my fondest memories are walking to downtown with my grandpa, sitting at my grand uncles kitchen table and going up the river to fish. During these formative years I was always careful to listen to what they had to say."
