Three people on a Zoom call discussing a cosmetic product

Joanne Kim & Three Ships Beauty

This week’s SFU Surrey Co-op featured student is Joanne Kim, an Interactive Arts & Technology student who has been doing some excellent UI/UX design work at Three Ships Beauty. Three Ships Beauty is a cosmetics company whose mission is to “be the most transparent beauty brand in the world.” During her co-op, Joanne has been doing a lot of user research, interviews and brainstorming creative solutions to improve the users' shopping experience on their e-commerce store. She also helps out the team with creating visual assets, web pages for product launches, and marketing campaigns, as well as building the Amazon A+ content.

Joanne’s Favourite Part of Her Co-op Experience

Joanne says her favourite part of the job is the team's work environment! She says “We're an all-female team and I love how upbeat our meetings are, despite the fact that they are remote!”.

Employer Feedback

When asked for their thoughts on hiring a co-op student, Joanne's supervisor said: “Having a co-op student has been incredible. Joanne was able to onboard quickly and get a good understanding of the business. She took on projects with initiative and helped drive a lot of positive changes in our online customer experience. We've been able to accomplish so much with her being part of the team!"

How the SFU SIAT Co-op Program Has Supported Joanne

Joanne says that the SIAT co-op team helped her review her resume, cover letter and portfolio which was really helpful in the job search process.

Joanne’s Advice to Other Co-op Students

Joanne’s advice to other SIAT co-op students is to “get inspiration from other people's portfolios and really understand how to unravel your design process before actually building your portfolio. It's totally ok if you don't perfect it the first time because your portfolio will always be a work-in-progress.”

One of the most memorable parts of my time in co-op was the collection of accidents, errors, mistakes, and mix-ups that happened in the course of working in the laboratory.
