I joined the SFU Iranian Club when I transferred to SFU last semester. I’m Iranian myself, and it’s important for me to represent and be a part of our culture. For the Persian New Year (Nowruz), we put up the Iranian Nowruz Gala together to celebrate. It was an event for Persian music, poetry, and dancing. The food was amazing.
You may think working with a group of people from the same place is easier to deal with, but that’s not necessarily true. There are always problems when trying to run such an event – different people have different ideas, so we had contradictions about how to do things. All this said, if someone needed help at the Gala, we really helped each other. Our ultimate goal was to have a good party and we did that. I honestly love this club – I’m new but I feel like I’ve known these people for a long time. I’ve known these people for one semester and they’re like family already, which is amazing.
