There is more to university than going to class. It is a place to meet new people, explore various interests and have fun. Getting involved on campus can make your university experience more enjoyable and rewarding. There is no better time to start looking for opportunities than at the start of the semester when many clubs and organizations are seeking new members or volunteers. Here are a few ways you can get involved on campus this semester:
1. Join an Intramural League
You do not have to be a varsity athlete to enjoy sports at SFU. From soccer and futsal to basketball and volleyball; there are intramural leagues for people of all skills levels. It is a great way to stay active, have fun and enjoy a little healthy competition.
2. Go Greek
Pledging a fraternity or sorority may be a good choice if you are seeking structured social opportunities, an extensive alumni network and philanthropic projects. Greek organizations are close knit communities that allow for long lasting friendships and make a large SFU campus feel small and intimate. Moreover, many sororities and fraternities offer scholarships to their members and a wide range of leadership opportunities.
3. Participate in Research
Getting involved in the academic life of SFU is a great idea if you want to explore various career paths, seek hands on experience and get a better picture of the scope of the work SFU accomplishes. SFU is home to cutting edge research being conducted across various disciplines and there is always need for participants and research assistants. Ask your professors or go to your department’s research website to learn more about how to volunteer.
4. Utilize SFU Resources
Community engagement is highly encouraged at SFU. As students we have access to numerous resources to get involved, learn new skills, gain experience and enhance our university experience. For various volunteer and job listings visit: myInvolvement and Symplicity, to develop personal and leadership skills join a leadership program and if you are overwhelmed and do not know where to start, talk to an engagement peer.
5. Get Connected on Social Media
With rapid advances in technology, social media has become a staple in many of our lives and is the main communication tool for many clubs and organizations on campus. You can learn about various clubs and events on campus by looking them up on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram etc. Using social media for such purposes can also show future employers that you value community engagement.
These were just some of the many ways to get involved, if you want to learn about more opportunities visit Student Services’ Get Involved website or attend SFSS Clubs Days on January 13th-16th 2015. Your university experience is what you make of it; engage beyond the classroom by getting involved today!
