Co-op Background (Nokia)

Many recognize Nokia as the mobile phone company with their indestructible devices, unforgettable ringtones, and the snake game. However, over the years, Nokia has reinvented themselves by providing telecommunication infrastructure and digital health technologies.

Being a leader in B2B (business-to-business) technology innovation and a pioneer of the digital transition, Nokia's new visual identity accurately represents who they are today. In order to advance digital technology across all industries and take advantage of opportunities, Nokia is leading the future where networks and clouds come together.

Kaylie’s Projects during her Co-op

During Kaylie’s work term, the NI (Network Infrastructure) UX and UI development teams came together to host NI UX / GUI Summit 2023 – a 3-day event for collaboration, team development, meeting challenges, learning business objectives, and introducing new strategies.

To prepare for the summit, Kaylie helped with visually organizing the presentation slides to ensure that they were consistent in terms of typography and alignment with Nokia’s new visual branding.

Kaylie also participated in the summit hackathon where she designed and developed ideas to simplify complex information while retaining essential elements that would make Nokia's products valuable to customers. She worked with developers, designers, and tech professionals to propose solutions for a complex problem and push the boundaries of what is possible in a fast-paced and supportive environment.

After the summit, Kaylie was in charge of editing the recordings and posting them on the team’s Sharepoint site so that they would be easily accessible to stakeholders.

Kaylie’s Favourite Part of the Job

Though Kaylie has worked remotely, her favourite aspect of this job has been the work environment. The team has made her feel welcomed even more so because she has worked remotely.  She has also enjoyed the remote co-op workshops they have provided for all newly hired co-op students.

Kaylie has appreciated the support the team has given during her time at Nokia. Their commitment, open communication, and mutual respect has enabled her to perform her tasks with confidence and a greater level of quality. Additionally, their constant inspiration and guidance has helped her develop professionally. Kaylie is thankful to have had the opportunity to gain knowledge from everyone she has worked with. She feels fortunate to have been part of such a supportive and dedicated team.

Employer’s Thoughts

“It has been an absolute pleasure collaborating with Kaylie during her two Co-op terms with Nokia. Her unwavering positivity, eagerness to learn, enthusiasm for taking on new challenges and commitment and responsiveness to projects has been an inspiration to the entire team. In addition, Kaylie has demonstrated a remarkable ability to quickly learn about the UX team and Nokia processes, which is a testament to her adaptability and technological prowess.

These are highly coveted qualities in co-op students, and employers are always on the lookout for individuals who can make meaningful contributions to their teams. In short, Kaylie's contributions have been invaluable, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavors.”

Advice for Peers

"Start applying early, stop procrastinating! Don’t wait until the last minute to start your co-op search."

Kaylie

She believes that starting early will give enough time to prepare for interviews and apply to more positions. To learn more about the company and the role, she suggests reaching out to previous co-op students (eg. LinkedIn) and asking them to share some tips about the hiring process or what their day-to-day tasks are!
