Yulia & Cellecentric
This week’s SFU Surrey Co-op featured student is Yulia Dmitrieva, a Mechatronic Systems Engineering student, who has been doing some excellent work at Cellcentric Fuel Cell Canada Inc. Cellcentric is a “50:50 joint venture between Daimler Truck AG and the Volvo Group”. Their mission is to “bring together 30 years’ worth of extensive experience in developing safe and efficient world-class fuel cell systems. By using hydrogen in our fuel cells, we create energy without emitting anything but pure water.” During her co-op, Yulia has been supporting the Cellcentric Manufacturing Engineering team in all aspects of production. She has been performing an analysis of the Membrane Electrode Fuel Assemblies using CT600s surface measurement system, a scanning electron microscope, RAM Optical Instrumentation, ZwickRoell material testing, DMA Q800 non-contact linear drive technology and Anton Paar Rheometer.
Yulia’s Favourite Part of Her Co-op Experience
Yulia says her favourite part of the job is “getting to help design an experiment and have complete freedom to create a structure for analysis. I love to run an experiment from the beginning – help to design it, use machines to do the measurements, think of a way and tools to interpret results, and finally draw a conclusion, present, and make suggestions.”
How the MSE Co-op Program Has Supported Yulia
Yulia says she is grateful for how the “Faculty of Applied Science has built an amazing network of employers and has a lot of exciting engineering positions available for students”. She also discussed how she is “thankful to have had the opportunity to go to interviews at cutting edge firms” because of the support from the co-op team.
Yulia’s Advice to Other Co-op Students
Yulia’s advice to other co-op students is to “Take a lot of notes and try to always dig deeper. That will give you a better understanding and competitive edge.”
