Herman
“Don’t forget that you are the one that best understands what you’re capable of. Confidence in your abilities is the key to opening doorways.”

Flora Zhou interviewed Herman Chan, an Interactive Arts and Technology student, who has been developing his skillset as a graphic design intern for close to 8 months at AGvisorPro. AGvisorPro is a start-up company that connects farmers seeking agricultural advice to trusted experts through the AGvisorPro app. The company's vision is to build the world's most credible independent agriculture network.

Herman's Highlights

Herman said his favorite part of his job was the flexibility and team dynamics, explaining that "working in a start-up has meant that I've had a larger voice in my team and I really enjoyed taking full ownership of my projects."

Employer's Thoughts

Brock Moir, Chief Product Officer at AGvisorPRO notes that as a small startup, access to talented designs is critical to the business. "SFU's co-op program has provided us with a pipeline of great students who are eager to learn and grow in various areas of design" He added that "we continually are impressed by the quality of the co-op students that we can find through the SFU program." Brock praised how well Herman integrated into both their marketing and design teams and how he has helped them build a coherent brand identity across their company.

Final Words

Herman believes that the co-op program helped give him the first push to start quantifying his skills and putting himself out there, giving him more confidence in the job search process. Herman reminds his peers: Don't forget that you are the one that best understands what you're capable of. Confidence in your abilities is the key to opening doorways."
