After having completed my first co-op in research, it was refreshing to start gaining work experience in a clinical setting. Metrotown Family Chiropractic and Massage provided me with an excellent opportunity to practice one-on-one patient interaction, learn about what goes into running a practice, and become more educated on the subject of chiropractic. Even though chiropractic may not be my dream-career, it has certainly been interesting to learn more about this field, as it is rarely discussed within my kinesiology classes. While I have learned so much during my kinesiology degree at SFU, there are certain experiences that are difficult to simulate in a classroom setting; in my opinion, gaining these experiences in the workplace is one of the most valuable advantages to participating in co-op. Some examples from my current co-op position include understanding how the role of the practitioner fits into a patient’s treatment plan, the importance of health insurance in patient care, and learning about different types of business models in private practice.
