Being a mentor transports me back to my experiences in first year, remembering how isolating and daunting it can be. I interact with students from all walks of life, and I’ve found that many of them are worried about the SFU’s commuter school mentality.
As mentors, we try to remind students that even though getting their degree should be a priority, they also need to realize how crucial it is to get involved. I can see myself in my mentees' shoes - as a first year I was so concerned with good grades that I neglected the social aspect. Now I’ve learned that though we all have our fair share of all-nighters, it’s important to try and find a balance. Don’t forget to have fun.
