I joined SFU Red Cross two years ago and about a year later I joined the executive team as an event co-coordinator. I am responsible for the events team which organizes awareness initiatives as well as fundraisers. This semester, at our event, we’re going to be selling samosas and we’ll be holding a donation box for socks or other pieces of clothing which we will then take to a homeless shelter and donate there. So the work we do is incredibly rewarding.

One of the most rewarding feeling for me ever since being in this club has been all the people I have had the privilege to meet and to influence. The first icebreaker I ever participated in, I participated as a host. I got to interact with some of the potential members and I hit it off with one of them and now he is an executive of the club. He got really involved and not to toot my own horn, but I feel like I played a role in him getting really interested. I showed him that there are decent people and it’s a good time in the club. So I’m happy that I might have played a role in influencing someone in a positive way.

Being in SFU Red Cross has also been beneficial to my own personal development. I have gotten so much better at compromising and have learnt that people have good ideas and it’s worth listening and being open to them. This, along with the opportunity to interact with different people and leading are skills that I am grateful to be acquiring from being a volunteer!
