KidStart is a part of Plea’s community services and its aim is to pair at risk youth in the community with volunteer mentors. I started volunteering as a mentor about a year ago and it has been an amazing experience. I have always enjoyed working with youth and I have always done things that involve working with kids within the community so I figured that this was the perfect volunteer opportunity for me.

My ‘job’ is to mentor the youth I am paired up with and be someone they feel free and comfortable to tell what is going on in their lives and what they may be struggling. Sometimes kids feel unheard and they just need someone who is not an authority figure like a parent or a teacher, to just listen and give them advice without fear of being judged.

It’s been very rewarding just getting to experience things with my youths that they have never done before. It’s always nice seeing them try new things and take a chance without being worried about being judged by their peers or anything like that.

Volunteering has taught me a lot such as how to be an active listener and an effective communicator, just to name a few. So I would encourage anyone thinking about volunteering, to go for it. You will learn and grow so much in the process.
