“My favourite part of working at SFU Surrey is the friendly work environment! I received a very warm welcome from the Surrey Campus Administration team and the staff at SFU Surrey, and I have made many new friends and connections throughout my co-op. I also really enjoy the variety of projects that I get to work on, as there is always something new and interesting happening at our campus and in our community.”

Isabelle Louie is a 4th year School of Interactive Arts and Technology student who is currently working as a co-op student for SFU Surrey on the Administration team. The SFU Surrey Campus Administration supports students, faculty, and staff at Simon Fraser University by overseeing day to day operations across the Surrey campus. The Surrey Campus Administration also works with local businesses and community groups to develop community programs and create academic, research, and community engagement initiatives.

Throughout her co-op work terms, Isabelle completed various projects within the SFU Surrey Campus Administration. One of her favourite projects that she worked on during her co-op was The Journey Here – a podcast from SFU Surrey. In creating a brand-new podcast from scratch, she had the exciting opportunity to be involved in every stage, from pre-production to launch. Isabelle’s responsibilities included creating the cover art, researching guests, writing interview questions, editing and assembling episodes, and creating promotional materials.

Another exciting project that she worked on was the transition to a new website design for SFU Surrey. The project took approximately three months to complete and involved reaching out to major stakeholders, establishing a consistent style across all pages, updating the website copy to be more concise, and revising existing pages to conform with the new style guide.

Aside from her projects, she’s also supported the day-to-day communication needs of the Surrey Campus Administration. This includes managing the SFU Surrey’s website and social media channels; building the SFU Surrey weekly faculty and staff newsletter; and assisting in the planning, promotion, and activation of events.

What SFU Surrey Had to Say

“Simply put, having co-op students like Isabelle in our workplace is critical to the success of our operations; we value the diverse perspectives, energy and skills co-op students bring to our office. We love how the quality and productivity of our work goes way up! Ultimately, our goal is to make this a win-win experience for both the student and our staff. During and after the work term, and in our own unique way, each of us gain from our time together.”  Nav Chima - Director, Community Programs & Partnerships

Isabelle’s Final Thoughts

“The SIAT co-op program has been immensely helpful during my co-op journey, from my seeking evaluation to my interview prep, and has provided support and guidance throughout the entire process. Stephanie, my co-op coordinator, was always available to answer any questions I had, and consistently provided invaluable advice and insight. As for advice for other co-op students: don’t be afraid to ask questions!”
