Embarking on my cooperative education journey at the BC Cancer Research Center, I find myself at the heart of pioneering oncology research as a Student Clinical Trial Research Assistant. This immersive experience bridges the gap between my academic knowledge and real-world applications. My daily routine consists of strictly adhering to the lab manual to process samples by using the centrifugation techniques and collaborating with other experienced lab technicians, researchers and patient interaction, all with the ultimate goal of developing trial protocols, which results in better treatment options for cancer patients and improved health quality. During this co-op, I gained so much hands-on experience in the methodologies that drive cancer research forward. I also learned to manage multiple sample documentation while maintaining patients’ confidentiality as required in the guidelines and ethical standards. This hands-on involvement in BC Cancer enhances not only my lab techniques and problem solving skills but also interpersonal communication with other lab partners to accomplish multiple research projects.

Overall, this experience is profoundly transformative, instilling in me a deep respect for the resilience of patients participating in trials and a nuanced understanding of the critical role of clinical research in advancing cancer treatment. It's also a unique opportunity to contribute to research that has the potential to save lives and improve the quality of care for cancer patients around the world. Last but not least, this co-op placement provides a clearer direction for my passion and future career goal, steering me toward a path where I genuinely feel motivated and excited to contribute.
