Being the youngest in the office is difficult because feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt, and comparison can arise. Here are 5 common thoughts paired with affirmations to combat those negative, self-deprecating feelings so you can succeed and reach your full potential. Because these pesky thoughts are only holding you back!
1. “Nobody takes me seriously”
Truth: This is a common feeling and many still feel this way after working at a place for years! This is a judgement that you are making and you are assuming what others think of you. Not only is this statement untrue, but it will not serve you any purpose other than self-deprecation.
Affirmation: I cannot control or assume what my coworkers or employers think of me, all I can do is my best
2. “I shouldn’t speak up / share my ideas”
Truth: Employers love hearing new ideas! In my experience, employers love hearing new ideas from new staff because it gives them a new, fresh perspective. There is nothing to lose when pitching an idea; the worst thing that can happen is someone says no.
Affirmation: I have good ideas and deserve to be heard
3. “I’m so inexperienced”
Truth: You are there to gain experience! Your coworkers and employers know this before you even start the job. It’s important to remember that your employer clearly sees something valuable in you and has chosen you for the job.
Affirmation: I am here to learn and practice what I have learned in class and previous job experiences
4. “Everyone is so much smarter than me”
Truth: These people may have been at your place of work for years. Comparing someone who has been there for 10 years to yourself who has been there for 10 days is unfair. Besides, I’m sure there are some things that you know that they may not (like how to manage WordPress!) And again, you are there to learn.
Affirmation: I know I am smart and comparing myself to others will not serve me any purpose
5. “I feel out of place / I shouldn’t be here”
Truth: Starting a new job anywhere can be uncomfortable – let alone if you are only staying for 4 – 8 months. This feeling subsides with time, and also helps you to determine if this type of work is what you want to be doing. It’s important to remind yourself that you deserve to be there just as much as anyone else. Offer yourself some compassion and praise for making it this far – what a victory!
Affirmation: I have worked hard to earn this position and I deserve to be here
