Don't give up. Stick to your schedule, your rules, don't procrastinate and stay healthy.

The summer months are some of the best months of the year with the sun, the beach and the gloriously warm weather. It brings back the memories of being a kid, where we would have summer vacation, long days spent with friends eating ice cream, and playing outside. However, as we get older, we find ourselves gaining more responsibilities and losing free time. Knowing how to balance school and work is essential in the summer, so you can still have fun in the sun while staying on top of your work load too!

  1. Set a schedule: I cannot stress enough how important time management is. A schedule sets the tone for the rest of the day, keeps you productive while still allowing you time to have fun at a certain time. Write ahead of time each week what time is allotted to school, work, family, friends and most importantly, you time. Don't forget to give yourself time to be by yourself and relax doing whatever it is that you love most.

  2. Turn off your cellphone and television during the productive part of your day: These distractions are the main cause for a one hour assignment taking five hours, so turn them off for your allotted homework time and remind yourself that once you are done, the phone and television will still be there waiting for you.

  3. Work smarter, not harder: study during times of the day you normally wouldn't study. For example, tape some index cards with notes on them on the bathroom mirror so you can memorize them while brushing your teeth in the morning. Also, record your lectures on your phone or computer and listen to them on your commute to work instead of music; the more time you spend revising ahead of time, the less cramming and stressing you have to do later on, leaving more time for fun in the sun.

  4. Put an end to procrastination: If you find yourself procrastinating a lot, you will know just how badly it can affect your grades and schedule. Stay on top of your things and stick to your schedule. An additional twist: see something you really want to buy or somewhere you really want to go? Promise yourself that if you don't procrastinate this summer and stick to your schedule, you'll reward yourself by indulging in whatever it is that you wish to have.

  5. Exercise and eat healthy: It's easy to find ourselves reaching for the burger meal with a hot fudge sundae and extra-large soda, especially during the summer. But make sure to keep your health in balance by eating healthy while working and study, snacking regularly on fruits and vegetables and staying hydrated. Exercising for around 30 minutes a day is a great way to de-stress as well.

  6. Find a new study spot: If it's a beautiful, sunny day, why not go read and study in the park or outside on the beach. Just make sure you pick a spot that you find peaceful and you won't be disturbed by distractions.

  7. Stick with it! Don't give up. Stick to your schedule, your rules, don't procrastinate and stay healthy. Allow yourself to have fun in the sun while still being productive and studious this summer. Plan ahead and stick with your plan!
