I volunteer with Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland and the program that I’m most involved with is called Go Girls! which is a mentorship program that implements healthy eating, positive body image, and the ability to make friends among middle school girls.
For this program, you get to really develop relationships with the kids; they really confide in you and trust you. You get to know their personal struggles, their goals, and their wishes. There’s definitely a lot of challenges too, as these are students facing any difficulty that you could face at that age, like family, not wanting to attend school, mental health issues, and not being able to make friends.
Sometimes it’s tough, and they want to confide in you, and it’s hard to know how to approach that situation. I like volunteering mainly with kids and younger people, and it’s cool that you get to have a positive impact that might influence them later in life. Every volunteer experience I’ve ever had has been positive - and I’ve volunteered at a lot of places. I volunteer because get to meet like-minded people who are passionate about something we share in common, and I’m able to make an impact in others’ lives.
