Working in health care, even if not on the front lines, has such a human aspect. As a UX student, I love seeing how prominent that is.

Isabel (Izzy) Chan & Fraser Health

This week’s SFU Surrey Co-op featured student is Isabel Chan, an Interactive Arts & Technology student who applied some of her exceptional design skills while on her co-op placement this past term. Isabel had the opportunity to work as a Design & Digital Media Specialist with the Talent Acquisition and Onboarding department of Fraser Health. Isabel says, “One of my favourite undertakings was reimaging the Careers social media visual presence; being given the trust and freedom from day one to evaluate the channels, recommend an approach to help improve its reach and then the responsibility to carry it out has been an incredible experience for me to test my knowledge while still learning so much along the way.”

Izzy’s Favourite Part of the Job

When asked what her favourite part of working at Fraser Health has been, Isabel replied, “It’s definitely the team. Everyone I have encountered at Fraser Health has made me smile and laugh, whether I’ve met them in person or not. Working in health care, even if not on the front lines, has such a human aspect. As a UX student, I love seeing how prominent that is.”

Employer’s Feedback

Isabel’s passion for design has not gone unnoticed by her supervisor, Rheagan, who says, “It is tremendously rewarding knowing we are helping to support the learning goals of the students within our communities, and to be able to give them an introduction to what a career in health care might look like. With every co-op student, it’s refreshing to have a different and curious perspective where they are encouraged to use and apply their classroom knowledge in a real-life setting. Izzy has been a wonderful contribution to the Talent Acquisition Marketing team and has helped to level-up many areas in our visual and digital marketing efforts - it’s been a great experience.”

One of the most memorable parts of my time in co-op was the collection of accidents, errors, mistakes, and mix-ups that happened in the course of working in the laboratory.
