Fusing the world of Business and Mechatronics, Brendon Sauer has shown that MSE students really can have the best of both worlds.
Sauer earned his Business and Economics degree from the University of Calgary. While completing his four-year degree, Brendon worked for a customer of Discover Energy Corp. This experience allowed him to become familiar with the alternative energy industry. Sauer then decided that completing an Engineering degree would give him the ability to better communicate with the technicians and engineers within Discover Energy’s industry.

With that in mind, Sauer started looking for a specific engineering program that was tailored to his needs. He decided to enroll in SFU’s Mechatronics program for its variety of disciplines, and he felt that he could use his MSE knowledge to speak to manufacturing teams, customers, and to train sales teams on how to deliver their product to market.
After some soul searching within SFU’s programs, Sauer realized his career goal is to become a Technical Project Manager. Currently, Sauer is a 3rd year MSE student and is doing his co-op at Discover Energy Corp. as a junior project manager and developer. His role requires him to understand market demands and develop data loggers and battery management systems for industrial applications. He is involved with software, firmware, and hardware design for battery systems used in material handling, electric vehicles, and commercial cleaning equipment.
“This Co-op term reinforced my decision to join the MSE program. The knowledge and skills I have gained over the last three years have given me the ability to incubate a product from an initial idea to a delivered product. I look forward to tackling future projects and new challenges.”
