Position Title

I always knew that I wanted to volunteer, but I wasn't sure in what capacity. I saw a CNIB (Canadian National Institute for The Blind) advertisement seeking volunteers so I decided to give it a shot.

Working with the organization has cemented my career goals of working in eye care or the vision science industry. In my roles, you never know what to expect on any given day which definitely keeps things exciting.

I started out as a Vision Aid so a typical shift consists of an in-home one-on-one consultation with a visually-impaired or legally blind client. The consultations are relatively informal, so it can sometimes feel like you're getting together with a friend which is really nice.

More recently, I've been working as a part of a peer support group doing administrative work. I love that my role allows me to work with people rather than being predominantly isolated in a research laboratory setting.

The sincere gratitude of our clients and the feeling of fulfillment I get from making an uplifting difference in their lives makes it almost impossible to imagine myself wanting to do anything else.
