As engineering students, we have all been excited about the Co-op opportunities. Since the very first day of class we were told about this opportunity, which started my journey to look for the perfect co-op. It wasn’t easy; there was a lot of work including writing cover letters and resumes, researching the companies, looking through the job profiles and so on. But in the end, all of it paid off.
I started working at Teradici in September, 2012 as a QE (Quality Engineer) and I have stayed here for a year. By working here I have not only gained valuable work experience but have also made so many good friends. Now, I have come to realize that co-op is not just for building a strong resume but also for building a strong network of people with similar goals.
In the beginning of my co-op, I was very nervous about my work; there were so many things that I needed to learn. It was overwhelming at the start, but as the days passed I became very comfortable with my daily tasks. In the course of my work here, I have learnt so much about desktop virtualization, remote desktoping and different protocols. Also, the whole experience of setting up a PC on my own; installing and working with different operating systems, tools, and programs, was very helpful. This has importance to me because I used to be the kind of person who never liked playing with hardware, never opened the CPU, never tried to swap the GPU and now I wonder how I survived in engineering for so long without these skills.
Another aspect that is very special to me about Co-op here at Teradici is the opportunity to participate in different activities. The second month of my Co-op, I had an opportunity to manage the Halloween Party. A few Co-op students, myself included, built a haunted lab which was the highlight of the day. After that we had the “Holiday Celebration” which was an amazing event to meet the whole staff and learn more about the company. I also admire the fact that Teradici values its employees and community. They encourage you to participate in many community activities, I was able to participate in the “Sun Run” and volunteer at the “Ride, Don’t Hide” event supporting mental health awareness.
Having an opportunity to work at Teradici has been an amazing and a very valuable experience for me. I have gained immense knowledge and skills that I would have never gotten if not for this Co-op. I feel very wonderful to have had this opportunity to work at Teradici which has given me a new perspective and motivation to move forward with my career.
