This commitment is demonstrated by the work of the Special Advisor to the President on Aboriginal Initiatives – a first for a Canadian University.
The University’s commitment to building a world-class research institution has led to graduate student tuition that is highly competitive relative to other medical-doctoral and research-intensive universities in Canada. Graduate students at the U of S can pursue their studies in over 80 program areas. As well as programs in education, the humanities and the social sciences, the U of S has the most comprehensive range of human health and life science programs on one campus. This includes animal and plant sciences, nursing, medicine, pharmacy and nutrition, dentistry, physical therapy, veterinary medicine and kinesiology.
We offer Aboriginal-focused graduate programs and research opportunities including the International Centre for Northern Governance and Development, the interdisciplinary master’s program in Native Studies, the Indigenous Land Management Institute, the Masters of Education summer institute taught by Indigenous faculty, an Ethno-history field school and more. Whether it is chronicling the development of Métis society in a historical atlas, or exploring the impact of race and ethnicity on immigration, our faculty and students work together asking questions and solving problems.
Aboriginal student support at the U of S is also a central focus. The Aboriginal Students’ Centre is a home away from home for many of our students, offering tutoring, cultural activities, Aboriginal mentors and an elder service for traditional teaching and counseling. As well, the Aboriginal and Indigenous Graduate Student Council is active and represents, serves and support the academic and non-academic needs of Aboriginal and Indigenous graduate students within our community.
