Story Faculty
The communications assistant role encompasses a wide variety of tasks. My daily duties consist of approving and reviewing content that will go up on campus screens, as well as featuring content on our website. Once I have finished them, I can have the pleasure of helping my coworkers’ with their duties.
One thing I have learnt is that everybody goes into cooperative education hoping to learn transferable skills. Once familiar with the duties that they have originally been given, there will be a drought in this learning. The advice that my supervisor gave me is thus one that stuck with me for the rest of the time that I have been in this position - that the team that I work in will always comprise people with different skill sets and responsibilities. By helping the marketing and brand director with a landscape research into university esport, for instance, I will be gaining market research skills. The joy of seeing my hard work come to fruition in the form of a finalized SFU esports brand is an additional bonus. I intend to continue building my skill sets, so I will make sure to continue bringing enthusiasm and curiosity into any of my future endeavours.
This role has also given me the opportunity to gain a wealth of understanding about various social media platforms, especially Instagram. Part of my duties is to work closely with the Instagram channel manager in curating content. Because of this, I have gained a lot of experience in content planning and social media metrics analysis. I now know the best times to be posting content, the importance of a captivating image or reel thumbnail, and most importantly, how to edit videos. In fact, the reel that I recently made ended up being one of the top 5 posts on SFU’s Instagram account in February. I aim to get accepted into a marketing position for a club that I am passionate about. I will collaborate closely with the graphics team in the club, as well as some passionate “influencers” to create posts and videos that will draw more people into the club.
Finally, I have managed to improve my writing skills. Along with social media duties, I have had the opportunity to work with the media and public relations team to write news stories for SFU News and the internal dashboard. This requires me to write in a clear and concise manner, quite different from the flowery language that I am used to. Writing concisely is a skill that is transferable across all of my disciplines. One can be sure that I will use it in writing my future psychology papers, where getting the topic across to readers in a way that is easy to understand is crucial.
