Taking classes in the summer can present some unique challenges. With warmer weather, exciting events, and endless opportunities for fun, it's easy to get swept away in distractions. Finding a balance between academic responsibilities and personal well-being is important. Here are 4 ways to help you prioritize so you can balance and enjoy everything the season has to offer:

1. Create a Realistic Schedule

Make plans for joy, as well as your academic and personal commitments:

Do you want to spend more time at the beach this summer? Schedule that in.

Do your friends always get together on Friday nights? Schedule them in. 

Schedule dedicated time for studying and work, but also make a plan for activities that can help you relax, connect, and have fun.  A balanced and realistic schedule will help you avoid burnout and fomo so you can maximize that summer energy and keep more focused in the long run.

2. Set Clear Boundaries

As you schedule in specific times for studying and coursework, communicate this to your friends and family and let them know when you need uninterrupted time.

Share your calendar with people you’re close to, and find ways to support your digital well-being including adding daily limits to social media or finding apps to assist with focus and productivity.

You have a lot going on and it’s okay, and necessary, to take space and time for each of the different priorities in your life. Boundaries are key to finding the right balance.

3. Consider a Mindfulness Routine

You’ve got a lot happening, and it's important to stay present and in tune with your own needs. Make space in your day to reflect on your emotions, thoughts, and feelings so you can progress in ways that are meaningful to you.

Explore mindfulness techniques online and find ways to center yourself, check in with your body, and reduce stress.

Want something consistent to schedule in? Health & Counselling hosts Mindfulness Meditation sessions facilitated by registered clinical counsellors on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

4. Seek Supports

Recognize that you are a priority too. 

Things happen, and things come up — and you don’t have to struggle alone. Whether there’s something that’s been bothering you for awhile, or something new that has impacted you, there are lots of resources and people at SFU to support you so you can enjoy this season and stay successful in your studies. 

View a list of services at Health & Counselling, or explore different options available like the Women’s Centre or Out on Campus. Find a community of support at SFU and know what’s offered so you can also share with friends as things come up.
 
Remember, your mental health is just as important as your academic success so striving to balance both is key to navigating the summer term as a student. That way, you can enjoy the sun and season’s offerings before we head into the rainy season and term that comes next.
