As a mentor, every week is a new experience. My first-year mentees and I chat about the peaks and pitfalls of starting university they ask for advice on the best study spots, on studying for exams and papers, and we bond. It’s refreshing to hear so many great stories from different perspectives.

At first I thought I wouldn’t have much to offer these new students, but the more we share with each other, the more I realize how alike their experiences are to mine. That’s rewarding to me – to let the students know they’re not alone. When I first started university, I never thought I would have the time or reason to help others. Now that I realize how much I enjoy it, I feel like I’m passing on the torch to the next generation of students.
