For as long as I can remember, I've always been dancing. I started with baby ballet classes and then my love for dance took me into musical theater and singing. When I came to SFU, I really wanted dance to remain a part of my life. That was the time when I started teaching dance, choreographing some of my own material for musicals, and then I joined the SFU Athletics Dance team.

As an executive member, I help recruit new students, facilitate auditions, organize socials and events, and also seek opportunities to become involved in the local community, as well as SFU. We performed at the SFU Volunteer Appreciation Festival, and we also did community events, such as dancing at Rogers Arena with the Warriors Lacrosse teams. We also perform at the NCAA men's basketball games, and we do that two times a week. We practice two times a week and a lot of the beginning months is spent learning choreography.

What I really love about the team is that there's a place for everybody. Even if you don't have too much experience, we definitely encourage everybody to come out to auditions and give it a try because we cater to a variety of dancers. We have people with a really strong background in ballet, jazz, or hip hop, so we have a lot of different varieties in our dance numbers.

If you don't make it on the performance team, we also have a training team, and you come to all of the practices. The only difference is that you don't do the performances with the team for basketball games, but you still get the training and get to be with the team! For people who are a little more nervous about joining the team, they can always do the training team for a year and then try out for the performance team again.

My favorite part of being on the SFU dance team has definitely been the people. As an executive member, I'm really grateful that I'm able to create an environment where people can cultivate friendships. Bringing people together and building a sense of community is something that I believe is very important in all of the work that I do.
