Martial arts is a passion that I developed as a teenager. However, when I first came to SFU, I noticed that there was a lack of martial arts-related activities on-campus so I started the grappling club.

Because it’s something that I enjoy so much and I’m surrounded by people who are equally as passionate about it as I am, getting involved in this way has been super rewarding. Although doing administrative work can sometimes be tedious, I’ve come to accept that it’s an unavoidable part of being a leader.

Volunteering in a position that consists of a considerable amount of responsibility has allowed me to continue developing my leadership skills, which will be of great benefit to me in my career.

If you really want to get involved, scheduling is key. If you find that there isn’t a club at SFU that suits your interests, don’t be afraid to start your own. It’s a great way to attract like-minded people and make new friends.
