I found out about the exchange program on SFU’s newsletter and I got really interested in this opportunity. I’m majoring in Mechatronic Systems Engineering and went to Nanyang Technological University in Fall of 2017.

After I came back from the exchange, I volunteered for the GPS Buddy Program which connects an exchange student with an SFU student. My role was to help a Singaporean student with his transition to Vancouver. We spoke a lot over email and WhatsApp; and had a lot in common, such as travelling, outdoor activities, and a goal of making the most of an exchange opportunity.

Overall, I learned how to deal with people, understand others’ point of view and was also able to expand my social network. This was definitely one of the best opportunities I’ve had at SFU.

My main goal at university is not to rush through the degree, but to make sure I make the most of my time here. I made sure I did a lot of traveling in Singapore and made connections whom I’m in touch with even till now. The advice I would give first year students is that volunteering is so important because you’ll never know who you’ll meet, and that experience will definitely help with your growth and career.
