I joined Toastmasters because public speaking is a transferable skill that can be valuable in a range of contexts. A typical meeting consists of some prepared speeches from our registered members and an interactive segment with a guest speaker. We also hold fun outings and events for our members.
Having the opportunity to meaningfully connect with others in the club has kept me sane during my time as a university student. Although I can sometimes be pretty shy when interacting with strangers, the practice I get at the Toastmasters meetings is helping me to overcome that. Becoming a member of the club has given me more confidence and has made me a more active participant in dialogues of all kinds. With so many clubs here at SFU, there’s something for everyone. I would encourage everyone to take advantage of that by getting involved in a volunteer pursuit.
