Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Greater Vancouver are organizations that work to develop children’s self-esteem; we help them to grow confident by having a mentor for them to look to as a role model. I started volunteering with Big Brothers when they created a program with SFU called Math-Mentoring.
Each session is an hour of math and then half an hour of playing games, a mix-up of math and bonding. It’s difficult, because a lot of these students are not particularly fond of math – they don’t look forward to doing math, so motivating them and encouraging them is a challenging part of this job. I come up with games and different strategies to help them, and this experience may be opening doors if I ever want to teach. I’ve always enjoyed connecting with people, and this opportunity allows me to experience new things; it helps me understand myself and where I may want to go in the future.
